Cold sores on the mouth can cause genital infection during oral sex for people who do not already carry the cold sore virus. Cold sores and genital lesions remain infectious until they have crusted over, so contact should be avoided during this time because the virus can be transmitted to other parts of the body, and to other people, especially between the mouth and the genitals.
Cold sores can be uncomfortable, unsightly and embarrassing for sufferers and they also carry the risk of spreading the herpes virus to other parts of the body or to other people and cold sores inside the mouth can be problematic, interfering with talking and eating. But on the whole, cold sores are not too serious for most people, just a little annoying.
