Dealing with Cold Sores

Cold Sore Advice and Information

Cold sores are caused by a virus (HSV-1, a version of the herpes virus) that can make it painful to drink, eat, and even sleep. There are several other symptoms as well, including fever, sore throat, and possibly even swelling around the neck area. Just like the more unpleasant form of herpes (caused by HSV-2), cold sores are very contagious and can easily be spread by physical contact. It’s very important to avoid kissing, having oral sex, and touching the blisters.

What causes cold sores to suddenly appear? It can be several things, including fatigue, stress, injury to the lips, gums, or mouth, allergies, other types of infections, and even dental surgery or treatment. Doctors can easily diagnose cold sores, and often only a visual examination is necessary.

When it comes to preventing cold sores, there isn’t much you can do. If you come into contact with someone who has a cold sore, you may want to wash your hands frequently and try not to touch your face (especially your mouth, nose, and eyes).

Cold sores can be treated with an antiviral medicine prescribed by your doctor. This medication specifically works against the herpes virus, can help relieve many symptoms, and can make the cold sores vanish more quickly. You might also find an over-the-counter product that helps, but unlike a prescription medication, these products generally only combat the effects of a cold sore and don’t help get rid of it. Finally, cold sores usually vanish within about a week to ten days after they appear.
